The United Nations designated January 27-the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945-as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It was from this date that global consciousness of the premeditated killing of millions of innocent people began to grow into a full understanding of the horror of the Holocaust.

The Government of Canada believes it is crucial to keep the memory of this devastating period in human history alive in order to learn from it. Only by understanding the causes and consequences of the Holocaust can we ensure that it never happens again.

Canada's ongoing efforts to become a full member of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research reflect our commitment to ensuring that future generations of Canadians have every opportunity to understand the causes of the Holocaust and to reflect on its consequences.

Our Government remains committed to combating all forms of racism, discrimination, and anti-Semitism, and to preserving and promoting human rights. That is why we announced that the Government of Canada would no longer participate in the Durban Review Conference.

As the Secretary of State (Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity), I am pleased to join with people across Canada and throughout the world in commemorating this day of Holocaust remembrance.
