“I unequivocally support the decision to boycott the Durban III conference, taking place in New York next September.
“The first Durban conference, which the proposed Durban III conference seeks to commemorate, turned into a festival of racism against Israel and the Jewish people that Canada was right to condemn. Sadly, while a decade has passed, the Durban conferences remain a staging ground for anti-Semitic and anti-Israel statements. Canada should absolutely not participate in the Durban III conference or countenance in any way these hateful views.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, announced that Canada will not participate in events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action (DDPA) in September 2011.

    Mr. Speaker, today our government announced that Canada will not be attending the September 2011 conference commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action. Our government will not hesitate to combat all forms of racism.

    Last December, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to hold an event in September of next year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the first Durban conference. This new event is being labelled in the media as Durban III.
    Just as Canada was the first country in the world to withdraw from Durban II, so, too, will Canada lead in withdrawing from Durban III.

An internal caucus revolt has forced NDP leader Jack Layton to revise his party’s position for a second time on Canada’s participation at the United Nations conference on racism, to be held in Geneva next year.

We must hold the UN to a higher standard

Canada’s support for the United Nations has been a pillar of our foreign policy since 1945. The Atlantic Charter, signed by Roosevelt and Churchill in the midst of the Second World War, expressed the deep hopes of a world battered by hatred and vicious men seeking world domination, a world seeking a new order based on justice and freedom. That dream came to fruition at the San Francisco Conference in 1945, where Canada and Canadians played a key role.

Mr. Speaker, after some initial confusion, the Liberal Party members came out in support of our government’s decision to withdraw from the Durban process. I commend them for that.
