Condemn Iranian government
Mr. Speaker, given the emerging circumstances in Iran, I invite all members of this House to join me in the following statements. First, I invite them to join me in condemning Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s genocidal comments regarding the state of Israel and the Jewish people.
Israel’s right to defend itself
Some have expressed strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist organizations in Gaza and Lebanon involved in capturing and killing Israeli soldiers and launching rocket attacks killing civilians inside Israel. Others have expressed outrage at the civilian deaths and destruction of civil infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon by Israeli bombing. Canada must continue to speak and act in support of peace in the Middle East. This includes mutually recognized and secure borders, democratic governments independent of foreign control, and viable economies and civil institutions capable of providing human security and dignity for their citizens.
Tragic Situation in the Middle East
Thank you for your many recent messages concerning the tragic and deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
Geneva conference attendance
Canadian government officials are defending their decision to send a delegation to a Geneva conference that perpetuated an anti-Israel bias. The Fourth Geneva Convention, which was held earlier this month, was officially boycotted by Israel, the United States and Australia. It was also unofficially snubbed by numerous other countries that simply did not show up. But Liberal spokespersons say that Canadian attendance at the conference provided an opportunity to register disapproval with the Arab bloc’s commandeering of the meeting.
