Canada changes UN votes on Israel

Canada has shifted its votes at the United Nations in support of Israel for the second consecutive year, and while community officials welcome the new direction, they are demanding more and holding Prime Minister Paul Martin to his earlier pledge to reform the UN. Canada last week changed its votes on three resolutions at the UN General Assembly’s annual debate on the Palestinian issue, adding to Ottawa’s shift toward Israel on four other resolutions last year.

10th Anniversary of Rabin’s Assassination

"A decade ago, Israelis were deprived of a visionary and courageous man who was an inspiration to many," said Prime Minister Martin. "His message of peace and hope is as important and resonant now as it was 10 years ago. We encourage Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and the international community to honour Mr. Rabin’s legacy through a forward-looking and meaningful engagement that places the voices of moderation on both sides of the issue at the forefront. Canada will continue to work with both sides for a sustainable peace that gives dignity to all parties."

Condemnation of Ahmadinejad’s remarks

I just want to speak on behalf of all Canadians in vigorously condemning the remarks that were made by Iran’s president.

Death of Ahmed Yassin

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the Prime Minister gave one position in terms of Israel’s position on the death of the terrorist leader of Hamas. Then his foreign affairs minister stood up and gave a contradictory position. Clearly these are his own words. He said that this was contrary to international legal obligations on behalf of the State of Israel.
