Yom Ha’atzmaut Samayach – Happy Yom Ha’atzamaut!
Today marks 62 years since the founding of the State of Israel, and as Canadians we can be proud of the strong friendship Canada and Israel have shared. In 1947, even before the creation of the State of Israel, Canada took a principled stance for the Jewish state by voting for its creation at the United Nations.
Since then, Canada’s relationship with Israel has grown and deepened. Supporting Israel – especially its right to live in peace and security – is the cornerstone of Canada’s foreign policy in the Middle East.
Successive Canadian governments have sought to enhance this relationship, and have brought Canada closer to Israel through economic, cultural, and education exchanges as well as the establishment of funds such as the CIIRDF to foster further collaboration.
While Canada and Israel share many common values and a strong base of friendship, we know that there are those who seek to undermine the relationship. Today, as we celebrate, we must also rededicate ourselves to ensuring that Canada and Israel’s connection continues to deepen in the future.
