Democracy in Action: Crisis in Iran – Follow Up
On October 27, Canadians came together in Ottawa for “Democracy in Action: Crisis in Iran” hosted by the Canada-Israel Committee. The conference was meant to challenge and encourage Canada’s political sector to take the lead within the international community on the Iran file.
Over 150 participants listened to a variety of speakers about Canada’s role and what they can do to help; the speakers included the Honourable Jason Kenney, speaking on behalf of the Government of Canada, the Honourable Irwin Cotler, Israeli Ambassador to Canada Miriam Ziv, Kenneth R. Timmerman, International Security expert, Mark Dubowitz, Executive Director for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and a keynote address by Nazanin Afshin-Jam, Co-founder and President of Stop Child Executions.
Among the issues raised in over one hundred meetings with Parliamentarians was the need for Canada to invoke SEMA – the special economic measures act – against Iran. In a related development, the House of Commons unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Iranian regime’s systemic violation of human rights and their unlawful nuclear program. A number of senators are also seeking approval of a companion resolution in the Senate. To view motion presented by Senator Grafstein, click here.
