CJPAC 2008 Camp Mock Election Programs
This past summer, CJPAC was thrilled to run our mock election program at nine camps across Canada. CJPAC developed and introduced this initiative at student leadership conferences over the past two years. It was introduced at summer camps in June 2007. Due to its tremendous success, we expanded the program. The exercise, geared towards CITs (counselors-in-training) and staff, is an election simulation in which participants form parties and run for office. Participants are encouraged to be creative, competitive, and to have fun as they compete against each other to become the elected party in power. Twists and turns are introduced throughout the mock election, as we present a realistic campaign experience with all the challenges, controversies, and scandals that may arise.
Our 2008 camp tour spanned the country. In Ontario we visited Camp George, Camp Ramah, and Camp Shalom. We also visited six more camps accross the country: Camp Kadimah in Nova Scotia, CBB Montreal and Camp Massad in Quebec, CBB Ottawa, BB Lake of the Woods in Kenora, and BB Riback in Alberta. Our first three programs went exceptionally well, providing an outlet for Jewish youth to engage politically, as well as increasing our young contact base across Canada. We received wonderful feedback from the participants, and many individuals have approached us to inquire about other ways of getting involved in the political process throughout the year. This simulation exercise has proven to be a huge success, enabling us to connect with Jewish youth and young adults, and letting them experience the excitement of politics. We look forward to visiting more camps in the summer of 2009.
